Almost 30 years and counting! That’s how long the popular Wynnum 60 & Better program has been enriching the lives of local seniors.

This something-for-everybody community asset based at Wynnum Community Centre in Florence Street runs more than 20 recreational, information and social activities each month for about 500 members of all capabilities, and from all walks of life. Some are freshly retired or new to the area and seeking new horizons. Others are in their active 90s or come along with wheelchairs or walkers.

Wynnum 60 & Better started on October 13, 1994, with a ‘Wynnum Jetty Jaunt’ and sausage sizzle – a happy gathering of local residents and officials, and has grown from strength to strength.

President Dianne McConnell said the organisation has always moved with the times as a registered charity with a benevolent public purpose.

“We are much more than a social club; our objective is to keep local seniors active, connected and informed with new and affordable skills, experiences, knowledge and events, so they can continue to lead full and happy older lives,” she said.

Among the most sought-after regular activities are exercise classes, local lunches, healthy ageing and support advice, and excursions.

There is always room for more at Wynnum 60 & Better, so mark Thursday, October 24, on your calendar, bring a friend, and share the fun at Wynnum Jetty and Whale Park from 10:00am to 1:00pm to celebrate the group’s 30th anniversary with a 2024-style ‘Jetty Jaunt’!

Sponsored by Council On The Ageing (COTA) and the Queensland Government, the event will feature exercise demonstrations, a commemorative jetty walk, live music, a seniors’ information and referral booth, sausage sizzle and birthday cake. New members can join free for the remainder of 2024.
