FROM THE DONALD SIMPSON CENTRE
Some of us are old enough to remember the MGM musicals and the songs, singers and musicians they featured. As they faded out, radio shows such as the hit parades and the Top 40s came along with TV shows like Countdown, Bandstand, and many others.
Two musical groups will play at the Donald Simpson Centre (DSC) in June and July, featuring songs from those eras in a relaxed and sometimes more lively format.
While the groups prepare their sets for these performances, songs from Duke Ellington, Joni Mitchell, Dave Brubeck, Cole Porter, and others will feature.
The musicians are not full-time professionals but talented amateurs who play for enjoyment.
Jazz ‘n Swing’s repertoire spans six decades of musical history, from the swinging sounds of the 1920s to the vibrant grooves of the 1980s. The band features Lyn Shepherd on saxophone, flute, clarinet and vocals; Ian Bennett on guitar; Gerardo Perez on bass, and Dave Fernandez on drums. They will play at the DSC on Saturday, 28 June from 2:00pm.
July 19 will see Jazz Eclectic reimagining the jazz, Latin, funk and pop repertoire with songs such as Dave Brubeck’s Take 5, Besame Mucho, Cissy Strut, Joni Mitchell’s Big Yellow Taxi, Duke Ellington’s Caravan and more. Instruments include tenor and alto saxophone, flute, drums, tabla, bongos and guitar played by Katrina Fawn, Trent Jordan, Dave Fernandez and Calvin Raison. Jazz Eclectic will play at the DSC on Saturday,19 July from 2:00pm.
For a cool afternoon’s jazz, book tickets at the DSC or phone 3821 1089. Tickets are $20 per show, or $35 for both.
