The first Rainbow Families Disco by the Bay – a free disco created especially for LGBTQ parents and their families – will burst into colour and movement and fun on Saturday 5 July.

Petria Leggo-Field is the Rainbow Families Project Co-ordinator in Queensland; as a local, she determined that some of the events would be held in the Redlands and the disco is the first step.

“I believe that there’s a big queer community here in the Redlands but we don’t know each other,” she says. “The Rainbow Families Disco is intended to provide a place for LGBTQ families to connect in a child-friendly atmosphere of safety and inclusion.”

“I felt quite alone when I came out as a gay parent. It would be lovely to have a society where no one has to actually ‘come out’, where we can just be who we are.”

Petria sees the growth of acceptance of difference in others as being driven largely by millennials and says the word is spreading largely through social media and word of mouth.

As well as dancing the afternoon away, the Rainbow Families Disco by the Bay will feature kids’ entertainment, a jumping castle, face painting and a family-friendly drag show.

Rainbow Families Disco by the Bay is on Saturday, 5 July 2025 from 2:00pm to 5:00pm at
The Link, 128 Link Road, Victoria Point. For more information www.rainbowfamilies.com.au or join the Facebook event.
