For the past few years, a grassroots basketball program in Wynnum West has been quietly transforming the lives of local young people.
Delivered by MADE Concepts as part of Brisbane City Council’s Active & Healthy program, the weekly sessions provide a safe, inclusive space where youth and community members can stay active, build friendships and develop confidence through sport.
Held at Wynnum West, Lota skate and basketball park, and surrounding community spaces, the program welcomes participants of all skill levels. Whether someone is picking up a basketball for the first time or looking to sharpen their game, the sessions focus on skill development, teamwork and positive mentoring.
What makes the program unique is its open and welcoming environment. Many participants come from diverse cultural backgrounds, and the program regularly attracts young people who may not otherwise engage in organised sport. Coaches focus not only on basketball fundamentals but also on life skills such as leadership, communication and resilience.
Over the years, the sessions have grown into a strong community hub. Families often stay to watch games, younger siblings join in skills drills and local youth find a positive place to spend their afternoons.
MADE Concepts has built its reputation on using sport as a tool for community development, and the program is a clear example of that impact.
