As a proud grandmother and passionate advocate for literacy, I have been involved in the Story Dogs’ literacy program for a couple of years now.

This initiative is close to my heart, as I’ve witnessed firsthand how it transforms the learning experiences of children – including my own grandchildren, who have been among the many who’ve benefited from the calm, non-judgmental, and supportive environment that Story Dogs creates.

The program is a simple yet profoundly effective concept: children read to specially trained dogs in a relaxed and pressure-free setting – and the outcomes are extraordinary!

Children’s focus sharpens, their literacy skills improve, and their confidence soars. The magic lies in the presence of the dogs, whose gentle and patient demeanour helps children feel at ease.

Reading aloud to a dog eliminates the fear of making mistakes or being judged, fostering a love for learning and self-expression.

One of the most heart-warming aspects of this program is the role played by the dogs themselves. For years, Story Dog Gizmo was a cornerstone of this initiative. His calm and friendly nature made him an ideal listener, and he had a special way of connecting with the children. Sadly, Gizmo passed away, however he left behind a legacy of countless lives enriched through his work.

Now, a new chapter has begun with Aurora, the spirited and loving dog who has stepped into Gizmo’s role. Aurora has embraced her responsibilities with flying colours, quickly winning the hearts of the children she works with. Her presence continues to create the safe and inviting environment essential for the program’s success.

For me, being part of the Story Dogs reading program is more than just a transactional sponsorship; it’s a privilege. There is immense joy in witnessing the progress of each child, seeing their faces light up with pride as their skills improve, and knowing that these experiences lay the foundation for a brighter future. It’s one of my favourite causes to support because it encapsulates the values of kindness, growth, and community.

This program not only enhances children’s literacy; it is a program that showcases the power of compassion – from humans and our canine companions.

Gizmo’s legacy lives on through Aurora, inspiring and nurturing young minds, one story at a time.
