The Wynnum Manly & Districts Men’s Shed was honoured to welcome the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Defence, the Hon. Richard Marles, and the Member for Bonner, Kara Cook MP, on a fact-finding mission focusing on the global phenomenon of the growing popularity of Men’s Sheds.

With the Wynnum Manly & Districts Men’s Shed rated as one of the best in Australia, and its membership soon expected to exceed 400, politicians are recognising the need for organisations like Men’s Sheds to combat the steep decline in mental and physical health, which in turn puts pressure on the health system.

As Baby Boomers were born in the era of television, followed by computers, home entertainment and social media, humans have become increasingly channelled towards a sedentary lifestyle, which is the antithesis of good health. What Men’s Sheds offer is an interesting and challenging alternative to sitting at home in the recliner next to the coffee table with an array of remote controls blinking in eager anticipation.

Modern equipment at the Wynnum Manly Men’s Shed, such as the 3D Printers, CNC Laser Cutters, Routers, Lathes and Steel Plasma Cutters, gives members the chance to undertake projects that participants find simply astounding.

As membership continues to grow and the need to encompass more interests and activities increases, the Men’s Shed is grateful to Kara Cook MP, who secured a grant to fund the building, for our next level of expansion.

Through continued support from the Government, local organisations and the community, the Men’s Shed can continue its symbiotic relationship with the community by offering help and support to those who grace our doorway seeking advice and assistance.
