Community

The Y (YMCA) Victoria Point is inviting local residents to take charge of their health through an exciting partnership with The University of Queensland. Together, they are delivering Small Steps for Big Changes, a free six-week program designed to help community members lower their risk of developing type 2 diabetes by building healthier, more active lifestyles.

With rates of type 2 diabetes continuing to rise across Australia, this program offers a practical, supportive pathway for people who want to make sustainable improvements to their wellbeing. Rather than overwhelming participants with drastic changes, Small Steps for Big Changes focuses on achievable daily habits: moving more, eating better, and building confidence along the way.

What makes this program unique is the expert support and full access to Y facilities. Participants will receive personalised health coaching from qualified, experienced trainers, who guide them through realistic goal setting, tailored activity plans, and simple nutrition strategies. This one-on-one support ensures every person’s journey is shaped around their needs, preferences, and starting point.

To make healthy living even more accessible, the Y Victoria Point is providing program participants with free, unlimited access to its facilities for the full six weeks. This includes access to the spacious weights and cardio areas, group fitness, pool and aqua aerobics sessions, 24/7 gym access, plus other activity spaces designed to help participants explore new ways to stay active in a welcoming, community-focused environment.

The program is open to eligible adults who want to take proactive steps toward improving their health, whether they’re looking to increase physical activity, make better food choices, or simply feel more energised in their daily lives.

By combining expert guidance, community connection, and practical tools, Small Steps for Big Changes empowers locals to build healthier habits that last long after the program ends. It’s a powerful reminder that meaningful change doesn’t require giant leaps – just the courage to take the first small step.
