Dress up in your favourite outfit and gather your besties for an unforgettable Galentine’s Day lunch! It’s the perfect time to celebrate the joy your friends bring and show them just how special they are.

Wynnum 60 and Better is hosting a Galentine’s Day lunch on Thursday, February 13, at the perfectly named Mates Restaurant at Wynnum.

The group’s program manager, Wendy Stewart, said informal social events like this are amongst the group’s most popular activities.

“This can absolutely be the best day of your year; like a big group hug of happiness,” she said.

“Much more inclusive than Valentine’s Day, there are no rules or romantic expectations around spoiling those special people who stick by our sides as other relationships come and go.

“It’s definitely not just for ’gals’ or singles; it’s about having fun and making special memories to show how much we value our nearest and dearest friends, no matter who they are – those wonderful human beings who put up with us at our worst, embrace all our faults and foibles, keep us grounded and generously accept us as we are.”

A decade ago, Galentine’s Day was merely a cultural reference in an American television series. The concept was the brainchild of Parks and Wildlife sitcom character Leslie Knope, played by actor Amy Poehler, to shower her close girlfriends with gratitude and affection. It has since been adopted as a delightful annual tradition on February 13 in many parts of the world.

From women celebrating women, and going out to brunch, it has grown into an opportunity to celebrate the strength, support and joys of friendship that anyone and everyone can share.

Wynnum 60 and Better works hard to reduce social isolation in the community by keeping members engaged and connected for friendship’s sake, personal growth, and mental and physical wellbeing. Monthly lunches are held at a different bayside venue, typically attracting 30 to 40 people.

If you haven’t tried one of the organisation’s lunch dates, Galentine’s Day is a great place to start!
