John Bullion, a self-effacing Birkdale resident, was recently presented with the Redland City Council’s Australia Day Local Hero Award. He was nominated for the accolade by Brendan Smith, the principal of Birkdale State School.

“Thanks to John’s hard work and dedication our school has one of the most complete histories of any school in the Redlands – possibly in Queensland,” he says.

“John single-handedly compiled a written record of our school’s 108-year history with photographs, artefacts, personnel and student records and records of events. He has also given countless hours of his own time to assist with musical, sporting, cultural and artistic school occasions.”

Brendan acknowledged John’s significant contribution to the school’s 75th and Centenary celebrations, in 1991 and 2016 respectively, and says that John embodies everything associated with being a local hero; humility, respect, kindness and generosity.

“Our school owes him a great debt for his work over many years and his work as volunteer school historian. It’s wonderful that he has been awarded this recognition of his contribution.”
