Aphasia is a condition that makes it hard for people to communicate — it can affect speaking, understanding, reading, and writing. It’s important to know that aphasia doesn’t affect a person’s intelligence. It happens when the parts of the brain that control language are damaged, often due to a stroke or another type of brain injury.
The Wynnum Aphasia Group helps individuals with aphasia connect, chat, and meet others in a safe, friendly, and supportive environment. The group is relaxed and inclusive, and caregivers are welcome to attend. Biscuits and tea or coffee are provided, and the group explores a new theme each week, which is chosen by the group members.
The group is led by a qualified speech pathologist, is free to attend, and open to all levels of communication ability. The group meets on the last Thursday of the month at Wynnum Library from 9:30am to 10:30am.
