FROM THE WYNNUM MANLY & DISTRICTS MEN’S SHED

The Wynnum Manly and District Men’s Shed, with its frequent garage sales, is ever-mindful of keeping usable items out of landfill and if need be, saving the planet one second-hand article at a time.

Some of our committed members are also volunteers at the Wynnum Repair Cafe, which breathes life back into precious items that owners hope could be resuscitated.

Imagine the immensity of the challenge when the Men’s Shed was offered two sets of beautifully polished steps, one going up and the other coming down, that were destined to end their lives as landfill!

President David Westlake and second-in-charge Harry Whiting took up the challenge to send them to a better place.

Now, David and Harry, both OBEs (over bloody 80), had to un-attach the steps from their location, manoeuvre them outdoors and lift them onto the back of the ute.

After initially unsuccessfully shopping them around, they were blessed with a moment of divine inspiration when they rang School Principal Charmaine Driver (pictured above) from the Darling Point Special School.

Principal Driver was ecstatic to say ‘yes’ as they were perfect for the children with walking disabilities to use as exercise equipment to improve muscle control in disabled legs.

And so David and Harry were now OBEs OTM (over the moon). They had found the glorious polished steps a forever home where they would be purposefully used and fortuitously saved from the dreaded landfill.
