You’re never too old to rock ’n’ roll. That’s the intent of Wynnum 60 and Better’s new Recycled Teenagers live music gigs to get members up and bopping to the beat or simply sitting back and enjoying.
The shows are a meeting place as much as a moving space; an opportunity to make new friends, mingle, sing, dance and lose yourself in the songs of the ’50s, ’60s and ’70s.
The perfect encore partner to get the crowd in the mood is charismatic Brisbane entertainer Rob Stevenson, the ultimate music man. Rob has been animating audiences for more than 40 years as a singer, piano man, one-man band, touring musician, backup artist, musical director for visiting acts – whatever it takes to keep the music pumping, fingers snapping, toes tapping.
60 and Better vice-president Stewart Webb came up with the idea after seeing him perform and marvelling at the way the audience responded.
“Rob puts on a very good show! He has great stage presence and a huge repertoire across pop, rock, country, folk, rhythm and blues, ballads, classic Australian songs,” he said.
“You name it, he can deliver, and he reads the audience to get the atmosphere just right, drawing people out, performing requests.”
President Tina Cotis said the first Recycled Teenagers show last month was a standout success.
“It’s great to be able to add another level of variety to our activities – not only the fun of the music but a chance to meet and greet, to talk and share the company of like-minded people,” she said.
“Members have said they’d like the opportunity to mix with other members in a group setting such as this. Besides, we are the recycling generation, we recycle everything else, so why not ourselves. Just because we are senior citizens doesn’t mean we’ve forgotten how to let loose and enjoy ourselves. We’re still perfectly young at heart, yet all too often we just don’t get enough chances to show it.”
The next event is on Wednesday 15 April, from 1:00pm to 3:00pm on stage in the upstairs hall at Wynnum Community Centre, located at 105 Florence Street.
Recycled Teenagers events cost $5 a head at present as an introductory fee, including afternoon tea. To book for the 15 April show, call the 60 and Better office on (07) 3348 6303, or email the centre office on [email protected] for more information.
