Based on the classic novel Oliver Twist, the musical Oliver! is a story about holding on to hope in the darkest of times. The Tony Award-winning show was one of the few musicals to win an Academy Award for Best Picture (1968) and is widely hailed as a true theatrical masterpiece by actors and audience members.
Oliver! tells the story of the young orphan, Oliver, and his struggles against the often cruel world he lives in. Born in a workhouse and sold into apprenticeship with an undertaker, Oliver escapes and makes his way to London, where he finds himself accepted by a bunch of thieves and pickpockets, led by the elderly Fagin. However, not everyone is suited to a life of crime, and Oliver soon discovers leaving Fagin’s gang and starting anew won’t be so easy.
“This production will be dark, gritty, dramatic and thoroughly entertaining. It’s a classic, reimagined,” explained director David Harrison.
With over fifty performers dancing and singing on a stunning stage set supported by a full live orchestra, Oliver! is a musical of hope for these days we live in.
Oliver! opens at the Iona Performing Arts Centre, Lindum, from 18 June to 2 July 2022. Tickets are available at www.savoyards.com.au, with prices ranging from $46 to $52.
