FROM OWN CAPALABA
The Older Women’s Network (OWN) Capalaba celebrated its 10th birthday in February, a significant milestone for any group. The branch started with just six members, and today has more than 40 ladies from different backgrounds with many interests, ranging in age from 50 to 90 years.
To commemorate the milestone birthday, OWN members opened a Memory Box full of photos and other items as reminders of activities and events over the last 10 years.
OWN members participate in various fun and engaging activities, including morning teas, lunches, bus trips, theatre visits and BBQs in the park. There is always much to share and discuss, which inevitably leads to laughter and chatting!
Speakers at OWN’s monthly meetings cover a wide range of topics, many focusing on keeping members informed, safe and healthy. These include RACQ, Scamwatch, Tai Chi, Pathways to Resilience and elder abuse.
The members also immerse themselves in the local community through various projects. They currently support the Neonatal Unit at Redlands Hospital, Night Ninjas, the local ambulance committee, and many more.
As people age and their circumstances change, OWN provides a safe community for ladies to meet for fun and friendship. Members can share their knowledge, stories and concerns without judgement and be assured of support and friendship.
Ultimately, the group aims to ensure everyone feels welcome and included. There is the opportunity to prevent social isolation and make new friends while maintaining a positive outlook.
OWN Capalaba meets on the first Wednesday of each month at the Uniting Church hall on the corner of Ney Road and Zandra Street, Capalaba, from 9:00am to 11:30am.
