October marked the launch of Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron’s (RQYS) newest social group, with the debut of radio boat racing hosted at the boardwalk jetty in front of a full restaurant of smiling spectators. The event drew a fantastic turnout with people of all ages joining in for training, racing and enjoying the waterfront location.

Being based on the southern shores of Moreton Bay, which covers almost 3400km2/1312sq miles of the Queensland coast of Australia, the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron boasts close to 4000 members with a wide range of interests on and off the water. From seasoned sailors to wide-eyed newcomers, the energy was electric as sleek, model DF65 radio boats zipped across the water, exposing a wider audience to the joy of sailing.

With gusty breezes and grins all ’round, it was clear that this Friday afternoon event is going to become a mainstay of the club calendar.

Boats are available for rent from RQYS and the activity is open to RQYS members, their guests, and visitors until early November, when the social championships begin in earnest.
