FROM THE ROTARY CLUB OF WYNNUM AND MANLY
Domestic violence is one of the major issues of our time. The Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly is asking the community to get behind its campaign to “Say NO to Domestic and Family Violence” – a Rotary nationwide campaign.
The first steps in this campaign were taken at the recent Ampol Rotary Family Fun Day, held at George Clayton Park, where club members wore their purple shirts with this message.
Former president Les Louis addressed guests at the event to explain the significance of the purple shirts. “We are looking to get businesses in Wynnum and Manly and the community behind this to get as many people as possible wearing the shirts on a Friday,” said Mr Louis.
State Member Joan Pease MP – a staunch advocate for domestic violence victims – purchased a shirt. Wearing these shirts will send a very positive message to the community that domestic violence will not be tolerated.
This year’s Family Fun Day was the biggest on record, with between 3,000 and 4,000 people attending over the four-hour event. Every sausage and piece of fruit the club provided on the day was consumed.
With the stall holders and an amazing musical program by local music legend Lyn Husband, ably supported by Steve Rickertt from Tru-Blu Trophies as the sound crew and MC extraordinaire, everyone had a great time. The children had a wonderful time with face painting, bag races, the parachute game, a jumping castle, a petting zoo, and much more.
Stall holders included Qld Fire and Emergency Services, Qld Police, including Crime Stoppers, Rosies, Bank of Qld, Sailability Bayside, QUOTA, Manly Kindy, OzFish, Wynnum Scouts, NAPCAN, and Zonta.
The Rotary Club of Wynnum and Manly thanks all of the stall holders, Ampol, Port of Brisbane, Ross Vasta MP, Joan Pease MP, Cr Alex Givney, and Cr Lisa Atwood for their support of this event.
