Bayside Brass has delivered an outstanding performance on the national stage at the 2026 National Band Championships held at Brisbane City Hall over the Easter long weekend.

Competing against six of the country’s finest ensembles in the Open C-Grade Brass Band division, the band proudly secured the title of Runner Up for Australia, but also saw the band crowned 2026 Queensland State Brass Band Champions, reclaiming the title they last held in 2023.

Musical Director and President Damian Bowden expressed immense pride in the band’s efforts, highlighting the determination shown in tackling this year’s demanding set of test music.

“This music was widely considered to be beyond our level and may even have discouraged some bands from entering,” he said. “But our players chose to embrace the challenge and proved that commitment and enthusiasm to have a go can be rewarded.”

Whilst there can be a healthy rivalry among bands when it is competition time, Mr Bowden explained, “We could not have felt more supported by our fellow bands”.

“We were offered equipment, alternate rehearsal spaces to try different acoustics, as well as mentorship and encouragement from bands all the way from Western Australia to the country’s most elite bands right here in Brisbane.”

The band also acknowledges the followers in Wynnum and Manly who have long supported their band as their ‘team’.

With the pressure of competition banding behind them until 2027, the band returns to its other favourite pursuit of performing for residents and visitors in the parks and gardens of Brisbane. Follow their socials to see where they are performing next!
