From superheroes and fairytale princesses to wizards, pirates and even unicorns, Brisbane’s bayside kids are invited to keep the Book Week excitement alive at a free community celebration later this month.
While the official Children’s Book Week festivities run from August 22-28, children’s author Kim Marie and her son, JJ Williams, will continue the fun and excitement at Wynnum West State School on Saturday, August 29.
Open to children of all ages, the family-friendly event brings together two of Kim’s greatest passions – storytelling and martial arts.
“As an author and someone who has loved books all my life, I wanted to do something that gets children excited about learning,” Kim said.
“They might get to dress up at school, but this gives them another chance to bring their favourite characters to life.”
As the writer behind the Black Belt Kids Series, each story is based on a positive life lesson, from courage and resilience to kindness, respect and perseverance – qualities she also teaches as the owner of Matt Fiddes Martial Arts Academy Carindale.
The main character was inspired by her son, who appears throughout the series alongside his best friend, Teddy.
“Children can be laughing and enjoying the adventure while also learning to be brave, believe in themselves and never give up. That’s what the Black Belt Kids are all about,” Kim said.
“I believe every child can be a Black Belt Kid, whether they practise martial arts or not. It’s about having a positive attitude, showing respect and having the confidence to keep trying.”
Highlights of the day include special book readings by Kim, martial arts classes and demonstrations, arts and crafts, giveaways, plenty of new and used books for sale, a sausage sizzle, and the chance to meet some lovable characters including the Ninja Turtles and Kung Fu Panda.
Head on down to Wynnum West State School between 11:00am and 2:00pm on August 29.
