For the last six years the Russell Island Community Arts Centre has held an annual art exhibition for its members, open to artists in all media. This year’s event, Metamorphosis, promises to be particularly interesting.
Jane Hooper, Event Coordinator and Gallery Curator and an artist who works in mixed media, says that the theme was selected from suggestions proposed by the members.
“It’s a good representation of RICArts as a whole; practitioners learning and changing and evolving their skills in terms of their art. Although we have the moth or butterfly image in our publicity we don’t expect people to be so literal in their translation; it’s a concept that’s open to their interpretation.”
For some artists just living on an island informs and changes their approach to their work and their perceptions of colour and space.
“Many of our local artists take inspiration from the island environment they live in,” says Jane. “We have an annual en plein air exhibition, that includes landscapes, seascapes and still life, and every year there is an arts retreat on Stradbroke Island.”
Eileen Munn, RICArts Secretary, is keen to see the submissions coming in.
“We hope that this particular art competition will inspire artists across the southern Moreton Bay islands to get excited about creating something a little bit different from what they usually do, that they’ll step outside their comfort zone. Every year is very different and we don’t put too many constraints on the artists. Because of space we have a limit of two works per artist but we’re expecting about seventy works in mixed media, two and three-dimensional.”
Art lovers in the region are eagerly anticipating the exhibition, which runs from September 5 to 27, with the awards presentation at 4:00pm on Saturday September 5.
