Another experience behind the wheel of an electric vehicle has me seriously considering an EV for my next car. The Subaru Solterra AWD was a pleasure to drive and provided an excellent opportunity to become familiar with the ins and outs of EV ownership.
The combined 252kW power output delivers the instant acceleration you expect from an electric vehicle, while Subaru’s renowned Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system ensures excellent road holding and driver confidence in a variety of conditions.
The cabin offers the practicality and thoughtful design Subaru owners have come to expect. There is ample room for four adults, along with generous luggage space. The seats are exceptionally comfortable, with electrically adjustable front seats and heating for all occupants. A large 14-inch infotainment touchscreen provides easy access to a range of features, including satellite navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, digital radio, and an impressive six-speaker sound system.
Having owned a Subaru Outback for several years, I found many aspects of the Solterra immediately familiar while appreciating the benefits of the latest technology. The cruise control and driver assistance systems are intuitive to use and perform with impressive accuracy. Features such as Road Sign Assist, Lane Departure Alert, Pre-Collision System and Lane Tracing Assist enhance the driving experience without feeling intrusive, providing useful support rather than unnecessary distraction.
Although I didn’t have the opportunity to take the Solterra off-road, its 212mm ground clearance and all-wheel-drive capability suggest it would be well suited to unsealed roads and light off-road use. The 18-inch wheels and well-tuned suspension contribute to a smooth, quiet and composed ride.
Overall, the Subaru Solterra is a capable, comfortable and refined SUV that makes a compelling case for electric motoring. The new 74.7kWh CATL battery, offering a claimed range of more than 517km, helps address many of the concerns traditionally associated with EV ownership. For anyone considering the move to an electric vehicle, the Solterra deserves a place on the shortlist.
