The Lions Club of Brisbane – Camp Hill Carindale has marked an impressive milestone, celebrating 60 years of dedicated service and lasting impact in the community.
Since its establishment on April 27, 1966, the club has grown into a strong and active force for good, thanks to inaugural chapter president Jack Tobin.
Originally known as the Camp Hill Lions Club, it expanded in 1990 to include Carindale, reflecting its wider community reach.
For long-time member Jorge Salles, the anniversary is a moment to reflect on a legacy built on generosity and teamwork.
“Over six decades, the club has delivered a number of projects that have shaped the local community including helping to fundraise and build the Carina Senior Citizens Centre (now the Carina Community Centre) in partnership with the Stones Corner Rotary Club, host Australia Day Citizenship ceremonies, run the Youth of the Year Program, establish two Lions parks, and build a bandstand at Whites Hill Reserve,” Jorge said.
Beyond individual projects, Jorge says the true strength of Lions lies in its commitment to making a difference wherever it is needed.
“Lions is not a fundraising organisation – it is the largest service organisation in the world,” he said.
“100 per cent of money raised goes back to the community – nothing is kept or used by admin.
“Over the last 10 years, we have provided about $250,000 in service and support.”
Looking ahead, the club is focused on growth and inclusion.
“We really want to dispel the myths that Lions is a club for males and retirees only, and make people aware that we do more than just sausage sizzles and sell Christmas cakes,” Jorge said.
“We welcome people of all ages and genders who are able to give as much time as they can.”
For Jorge, who has been a Lion for 30 years, including 25 at this club, the motivation to serve is personal.
“My father was a Lion for 42 years, so I developed a sense of giving back early,” he said.
“The feeling you get inside when helping someone struggling is amazing and a reward in itself.
“I feel that community service is the rent we pay for the space we take up on this earth.”
