Want to sing? Come and try Sing Sing Sing, Queensland’s first dementia choir!
Sing Sing Sing is warmly inviting people living with dementia and their carers, family, and friends who are curious about joining a dementia choir to take part in an affordable introductory program.
No singing experience is needed, only a willingness to have fun and connect.
Participants will experience a genuine taste of choir life, with opportunities to catch up over morning tea, make new friends, and become part of a welcoming choir family built on joy, belonging, and the extraordinary gift of singing together.
Founded by Melissa Gill, a qualified vocal coach, choral conductor and family carer, Sing Sing Sing has been rehearsing weekly at Redland Performing Arts Centre as a Company in Residence since early 2024, bringing people together through the power of music.
Research demonstrates that group singing can improve wellbeing for people living with dementia and for their carers, as well as reducing isolation and stigma.
“I know from personal and professional experience that a choir can offer connection, community and understanding. Everyone has a voice – and finding and using that voice can be a life-changing experience,” explained Melissa Gill.
This introductory series is made up of seven sessions on Mondays, including workshops and rehearsals. If you missed the first session, you can still join in later sessions. The program is supported by a grant from the Queensland Government Regional Community Arts Program through Arts Queensland, part of the Department of Education.
On Saturday 24 October, participants will step on stage alongside their new choir family to perform in an inspiring Sing Sing Sing showcase, a joyful celebration shared with family, friends and the wider community.
