FROM THE DONALD SIMPSON COMMUNITY CENTRE
The Donald Simpson Community Centre (DSCC) is proud to announce a heart-warming new collaboration between its DSC Matilda Quilters Group and the Redland Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This initiative focuses on providing hand-knitted and quilted blankets to patients approaching the end of life, offering a tangible layer of warmth and dignity during their final journey.
Recognising that the clinical environment of an ICU can often feel daunting, the Matilda Quilters have dedicated their time and skill to creating unique, soft blankets. These blankets serve as a gentle reminder to patients and their families that they are surrounded by the care and support of their local community.
The project is the result of close coordination among the DSCC leadership, the quilting convenors, and the frontline social work team at Redland Hospital.
“In those incredibly difficult and emotional moments, small acts of comfort and dignity mean the world,” says Thomas Jithin, CEO of the Donald Simpson Community Centre. “These blankets are a beautiful testament to the skill and massive hearts of our volunteers.”
Each blanket donated carries a special tag: Made with love by Matilda’s Quilters and Crafters – DSC.
The group members are thrilled to support this project, and many of them have donated wools and fabrics to keep it going for the hospital on a needs basis, says Carla Mason, Convenor of DSC Matilda Quilters.
This partnership has been made possible through the dedication of DSC members who attend the Matilda Quilters group every Monday from 8:30am to 11:30am, followed by a new fortnightly program on Thursday evenings from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.
“The blankets are also a reflection of what makes the Donald Simpson Community Centre so special. Our members do not simply gather for activities; they use their skills, time and compassion to make a real difference in the lives of others,” says Brian McDonald, DSC’s chairman.
