FROM DENTAL ON CAMBRIDGE
Pregnancy brings plenty of changes to the body, but one area that can sometimes be overlooked is your oral health. Hormonal changes, morning sickness, changes in eating habits and increased cravings can all affect your teeth and gums during pregnancy. Looking after your mouth isn’t simply about maintaining your smile; it is an important part of looking after your overall health during this important stage of life.
One of the most noticeable changes during pregnancy can be in the gums. Increased levels of pregnancy hormones can make the gums more sensitive to the bacteria found in dental plaque. This can cause gums to become red, swollen, tender or more likely to bleed – a condition commonly known as pregnancy gingivitis.¹ Bleeding gums during pregnancy shouldn’t be ignored, especially if you’ve continued with good brushing and flossing, it’s worth having them checked by your dentist. The Australian Dental (ADA) is researching the relationship between more advanced gum disease, known as periodontitis, with adverse pregnancy outcomes, including preterm birth, low birth weight and pre-eclampsia.²
For some women, pregnancy also brings nausea, vomiting or reflux. Stomach acid can temporarily coat the teeth and contribute to dental erosion, gradually wearing away the protective surface of the tooth.¹ One important tip is not to brush your teeth immediately after vomiting, instead, rinse your mouth with water and wait around 60 minutes before brushing as the stomach acid makes the enamel soft.
Is It Safe to Visit the Dentist During Pregnancy?
Absolutely! The ADA recommends dental care during pregnancy and says that necessary dental treatment can be safely provided. Local anaesthetic is considered safe, and low dose dental X-rays can also be taken when clinically required.¹ It’s still important to tell your dentist that you’re pregnant so your dental team can provide appropriate care. While dental treatment can be undertaken at any stage of pregnancy, some women find the second trimester the most comfortable time for appointments. Even better, if you’re planning to become pregnant, book in to ensure your dental care is up to date in preparation.
At Dental on Cambridge, our experienced dentists are here to help Bayside families maintain healthy teeth and gums throughout every stage of life – even when you’re literally growing another life! If you’re planning a pregnancy, expecting a baby, or simply haven’t had your teeth and gums checked recently, make your oral health part of your pregnancy care.
