FROM WYNNUM 60 AND BETTER
Calling all seniors – October is a time to broaden your horizons, connect with world issues, and loosen up a little.
Every year, Wynnum 60 and Better lifts the bar in new ways to engage its members during Seniors Month, and this year’s special events at the centre are no exception.
President Tina Cotis says this year’s theme is Oceans, suitably watery for a population that is never far from the shore.
Alongside the usual jam-packed schedule of diverse activities and outings, first up is our main event: a Blue Rinse Disco at 1:30pm on Wednesday 7 October, generously supported by our Federal, State and local Council representatives.
“Of course, you can get immersed in the theme by coming as a mermaid, Nemo, a surfie or dyeing your hair blue,” she teased, “or just come as yourself, prepared to have a good time just sitting and enjoying the show, dancing or singing along to the fabulous Rob Stevenson of Recycled Teens fame. It’ll be $10 well invested.”
Wednesday 14 October is another signature event for the organisation, a free screening of the must-see National Geographic documentary Ocean with Sir David Attenborough from 11:30am, followed by a fascinating discussion on plastic pollution and its effects on the environment and our health from Queensland University’s Dr Elvis Okoffo.
‘What a pairing! David Attenborough at 100 needs no introduction as the ultimate active senior, still changing the world with his insights, and an abiding inspiration to us all,” said Ms Cotis.
“And Dr Okoffo, research fellow at the Queensland Alliance for Environmental Health Services, is truly the face of the future with his pioneering work on monitoring plastic residues to help develop effective strategies to protect us and our world from insidious nasties like micro- and nano plastics. He’s very knowledgeable, approachable, and we can expect to learn a lot.”
Light refreshments will be served between the film and the talk; please book for catering purposes.
Last but not least, 60 and Better will turn the spotlight on its team of helpers, with a special Volunteers Lunch on Tuesday, October 27 to honour members who give their time freely to keep the centre and its activities ticking over smoothly.
“Without these amazing, indispensable men and women we would never be able to provide a fraction of what we offer,” Ms Cotis said. “We need to keep broadening our brains to learn new things as we get older, and challenging our bodies to be as active as possible. We can’t become set in our ways or stagnant – that is why we try to offer different experiences and opportunities on a regular basis.”
