The Redlands community has once again shown its generosity by digging deep to support people living with cancer by raising a record-breaking $16,770 for Daffodil Day across the region.
A dedicated team of volunteers from the Cancer Council Queensland Redlands Branch spent two days out in the community on August 20-21 selling bunches of the iconic yellow flower as well as Daffodil Day merchandise, with this year’s total surpassing last year’s impressive $15,000 and setting a new record for the local fundraiser.
Redlands Branch volunteer Jill Watson said she and the other volunteers were deeply moved by the community’s goodwill, kindness and the personal stories they shared.
“Even though it’s a very busy two days for our volunteers across four sites, it’s also our favourite fundraiser for the year,” Jill said.
“This year we sold 900 bunches of daffodils and over 200 Daffodil Day cookies, plus many more teddies, pens, keyrings, socks and Lego – there was something for everyone!
“The generosity of our supporters means a lot. Each year we see many familiar faces, we hear touching stories, and we also meet many new people keen to help.”
The team also received a helping hand from staff at Community Bank Victoria Point, who joined the volunteers at two sites on August 20 – Daffodil Day itself – helping out on what was one of the busiest days of the fundraiser.
The money raised will help Cancer Council fund world-class cancer research, support breakthroughs that save lives and provide support services for people affected by cancer.
“With almost one in two Australians facing a cancer diagnosis in their lifetime, every dollar donated helps create hope for people affected by cancer, now and into the future,” Jill said.
“For 40 years, Daffodil Day has been growing hope, helping fund cancer research and support services.
“In 1986, five-year cancer survival was around 46 per cent, and today it has reached 72 per cent – which is a wonderful reminder of what we can achieve together.”
