Swimming, cycling and running – triathlon has found a welcoming home in the Redlands. Pho3nix Qld Triathlon Series (QTS) runs three of its seven major triathlon events in the Redlands and is gearing up for its October 11 event in Raby Bay. Monica Cameron is the partnerships manager for the Event Crew, which runs the program.
“The events are different distances, so there’s something for every ability,” says Monica.
“We have youngsters, first-timers and newbies as well as keen triathletes and professionals. Our QTS events are very important on the racing calendar; there aren’t many triathlons in Southeast Queensland and the Series is especially important for professionals in the lead-up to the 2032 Olympics.”
Monica says that triathlon clubs use the series as racing opportunities, where they can gain club points, but it’s open to everyone in the community. “You don’t have to be auspiced by a school or by a club; the main purpose is to keep the sport alive so that people can stay active and healthy in a racing environment.”
There is a high cost to presenting triathlons: road closures, permits, sanctioning fees, and professional officials to ensure safety and compliance, so the Events Crew seeks appropriate funding and support, such as that provided by the Redlands City Council.
“Pho3nix, a charity organisation and our naming rights partner, supports a lot of young athletes and is passionate about getting kids into sport, supporting them and keeping them active.”
Each event usually attracts about 800 to 1,000 participants and twice as many spectators.
Monica says that while it’s very popular with the local community, it also attracts a lot of visitors who make it a weekend visit to the Redlands.
